This ROM was produced before the printed Newsletter was completed and sent to press (and if you’ve ever gone through every excruciating stage of the makings of a BMUG NL, you'll know we were at wit's end before, during, and after the monster was put to bed), so it may not contain exactly what we were expecting but we think you'll find more than enough utilities and entertainment files to surprise your sophisticated and/or way-out-on-the-left-field tastes.
You'll find the following folders on this ROM:
• About this ROM - You are reading this very file (no, you're not in an infinite loop), so you've probably already figured out that this is where to go if you’re confused or otherwise interested.
• BMUG Essentials - This folder contains information about BMUG in various forms, from a QuickTime presentation and HyperCard stack, to a simple text file. Check this folder for information on renewing your BMUG Membership. You'll also find the First Class Client software to access the BMUG BBSes (the latest version allows internet users better access), a copy of TeachText and SimpleText so that you can read files like this one, and a selection of other basic utilities and viewers for all your random needs. Lastly there is a copy of the BMUG Font ROM Browser so you can get an idea of what other cool BMUG ROMs are available.
Please Note: The "Introducing BMUG…" presentation file requires QuickTime 2.0 which is not included on this ROM. You can try playing it with QuickTime 1.6.1 which is included in the Apple Software folder, but it will play very jumpy and skippy (although that seems to suit the seemingly bubbly personality of the lovely lady starring in this little production of ours).
• Acrobat Stuff - Here you will first find the Acrobat Reader Installer. You must install Acrobat on your computer in order to open a ".pdf" file. This version of Acrobat Reader includes ATM (Adobe Type Manager) 3.8.2 which is a complete unlimited version (Power Mac native and Kanji capable). Earlier versions installed a limited edition.
Once you have installed Acrobat you'll want to checkout The BMUG Newsletter PDF (Portable Document) file, or any of Adobe's fabulous sample files including The Complete Works of Shakespeare beautifully formatted all in the "Acrobat Sampler Library". For formatted information about BMUG as well as a BMUG order form check in "BMUG Acrobat Files"
• Newsletter PD Collection - This folder (updated from the Spring 1996 Newsletter CD-ROM) in combination with the “New NL PD Collection” contains over 160 megs of Publicly Distributable software gathered together from the latest BMUG PD-ROM, recent Uploads to Planet BMUG, the BMUG Floppy Disk Library, and other sources. This sampling has been focused on the most popular and useful subjects and represents only a small segment of the BMUG Archives.
What's particularly intriguing in this collection is the fact that some of the items are a follow-up from the articles in the printed (and this ROM's PDF version) Newsletter. We have the end product of a graphic artist's foray into Ray Dream Studio's 3-D modelling s/w; Quarto!, written by a FutureBASIC II hobbyist, chess games to the gills; audio sound clips from public affairs radio broadcasts and radio interviews with the likes of R.U. Sirius and St. Jude, to name a few.
Also of interest, is the archive file index of the BMUG Planet BBS, and Apple's System 7.5, Update 2.0, as well as the System 7.5.3 revision 2.
• Apple Software - Apple Computer provides various "unsupported" software for exclusive distribution by licensed users groups to the groups membership only. The fact that this CD-ROM is bundled only with your membership is what makes this possible. We are happy to have such a unique selection to set this CD apart from all our others.
In addition to a random set of Apple Utilities and extensions, you will find all versions of the Macintosh System software through 7.0.1 except the oldest, 3.2, which being designed for Macintoshes with 400k drives and the MSF directory structure can not easily be imaged onto a ROM. You will also find all the System Updates including System Update 7.5 version 1.0.

• Fall 1996 BMUG Newsletter - First in this folder, you will find the entire issue of The BMUG Newsletter in an Acrobat PDF file. To view this document you must install Acrobat Reader or otherwise have some form of Acrobat 2.0.
The one noticeable difference from the printed Newsletter and the PDF files is that the printed Newsletter innards are printed in black and white. Many of the graphics in the PDF files are in full color, giving you a better idea of the product in discussion. So if you have the time, flip through a couple of pages (see the last days of eworld in all its technicolor beauty).
In "Choice Products software" you'll find a sampling of the software chosen in this season's BMUG Choice Product Awards printed in the Newsletter. It has been divided into three categories: free software, Shareware software, and demos of commercial software. Be sure to look here if you can't find your favorite Freeware or Shareware in the Newsletter PD Collection.
Last of all you will find the "Author/Editing Style Guide" for the BMUG Newsletter. The "BMUG Style Guide v3.1" is the first place to look if you'd like to know more about why we do things in the Newsletter the way we do. It also will help you to write in the BMUG style so that when you submit your articles they will require less "editing".Also included is the "NL Style Tags v3.1 - use this as the base for your articles using our paragraph styles to help you organize your writing the way it will be printed. Article submissions are accepted all year round. The actual deadline for articles to go in the next issue, Spring 1997 BMUG Newsletter, is November 1, 1996.
